These concepts have a long and honorable history in fine art traditions, but they are especially strong influences on contemporary New Mexico painting. The incorporation of Indian imagery (even without reference to its underlying meaning in many cases) is a symbolist characteristic. The dreamlike quality, the brilliant colors and the quasi-naive stylization of “Santa Fe style” are surrealistic and fantastic in the poetic sense.
