The archaeological and anthropological importance of New Mexico is underscored by the presence of living communities of descendants of ancient peoples. Their artifacts form an unbroken line to the present. In addition, such institutions as the Maxwell Museum at the University of New Mexico, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, the Laboratory of Anthropology and the School of American Research address the broader subject of North American indigenous history.

This has created a solid framework for dealers in historic artifacts of every description. Weavings, pottery and kachinas are heavily represented, along with basketry, implements, fetishes, hunting gear and ceremonial costumes and objects.
